From a small idea on the foothills of Mount Meru to over 500 volunteers placed across Tanzania — this is how it all began.
In 2013, Tarloch Pownall and Leonie Stoffer founded Volunteer in Tanzania with a clear belief: your time is extremely valuable, and every day of it should count. Tarloch, born in Tanga and raised in Arusha, had spent years working across Tanzania as a professional safari guide and project manager. Leonie, who first came to volunteer at a primary school in 2012, found a bigger challenge and never looked back. Together they set up the VIT Arusha House in the centre of Arusha — and opened its doors to volunteers from across the world.
What began with a handful of placements has grown into a network of over 21 active projects spanning education, childcare, sports, wildlife, and healthcare across three locations: Arusha, Stone Town, and Zanzibar's South East Coast. Yet the team has stayed small by design. Being a locally based crew — not a large Western agency — means lower costs for volunteers and more money going directly into the communities that matter.
Today, Volunteer in Tanzania partners with five established travel organisations in Europe and has welcomed over 500 volunteers. The Arusha house still feels like home. Prisca, the matron, has been there since day one. Braiton manages daily operations, Sia guides you from the moment your foot touches the ground, and a growing island team runs two houses on Zanzibar.
Tarloch and Leonie set up the VIT Arusha House in the centre of Arusha. The first volunteers arrive. Prisca joins as matron — and never leaves.
The Pink Mansion in Mbweni becomes the second base. Volunteer placements expand to the island, with Roger Badi leading as local supervisor.
Partnerships form with Travel Active, Praktikawelten, ELI Abroad, GlobAlong, and Wayers — connecting volunteers from the Netherlands, Germany, France, and beyond.
The team sustains projects through global disruption, maintaining support for local schools, clinics, and community centres throughout.
The South East Coast House opens on Zanzibar's east coast — a modern volunteer house with pool and dedicated team. Three locations, 500+ volunteers hosted, 21+ active projects, and counting.

Country Director — born in Tanga, raised in Arusha. Professional safari guide and founder of The Old Tanganyika Safari Company. Looking forward to seeing you in Tanzania. Karibu!
Program Director — first volunteered in Tanzania in 2012. Based in the Netherlands, managing operations behind the scenes. If you have any questions about the program, feel free to contact her.
Manager — hails from the Great Lakes Region of Kagera on the border of Uganda, University of Kampala graduate. Proud father of three football-crazy boys and a baby girl. Manages daily operations with a very diplomatic approach — "cannot be done" is not in this man's vocabulary.
Sia, Prisca, Rehema, Mlay, Faith, and more — the crew who run the Arusha house, guide you from the moment you arrive, prepare your meals, and supervise placements across the city.
Roger Badi and the Pink Mansion crew — managing house operations, meals, volunteer placements, and island adventures from Mbweni, just 15 minutes from Stone Town.
